My Windows machine is NOT connected to the Internet by default -- I only connect to get updates, so that is a manual action with a specific task. And I only do that if I have 2 or 3 days that I'm not really busy so I can handle any problems the updates cause. One more thing that bothers me, with automatic updates OR with download but wait for my approval, once those updates are downloaded to the PC, IF you try to reboot the I think a clear strategy for that case is still missing. It may be a good idea to delay those "optional" updates on your Windows 7 or 8.1 PCs today, just to ensure they won't cause problems when you install them.
