I use a filter because, I like to keep online temptation to the minimum. Find it first through Windows Explorer to make sure that's where you have it downloaded. You *can* automate the running of these programs in a couple of different ways. However, in trying to run AdAware without them it only finds negligible problems, no longer removing the cookies it used to take care of. Switched to Threatfire (which I still use on one system), but for the rest I use SpywareBlaster. I found a neat little script that gets rid of several really nasty desktop hijackers, but don't think it's for use by the general public. If you notice something odd inbetween times, run them again, it won't hurt anything. It seems that everyone is jumping on the adware/spyware/virus prevention/cure bandwagon. The reason why I don't like the idea is simply because alot of malicious programs immediately disable your anti-adware/spyware/virus protection. It is an on demand scanner... I was once again directed to download.com and downloaded and installed spybot search and destroy. No installation required. The free version of that program is available here (the installer for the new version should automatically remove older Ad-Aware versions). check over here I am removing it as it is nothing the previous SE.

I don't have a problem with "online temptation" so I don't need any filtering. I've since learned there have been others who have had similar problems with Threatfire.
I started using it because I saw something online that said I had spyware on my machine. If McAfee won't install, I'll find software that will. They've also apparently tamed the software somewhat, and with a little tweaking it can be made to work acceptably. Two reasons for including some of the programs that are on the list.
However, choose that option, you will earn my admiration and I'll take back anything bad I've ever said about you! HOW, I can hear you say, do I find safe mode? Several functions may not work. It's a great tool though, makes my job a LOT easier.
I trust my anti-walware programs to tell me if there is any malware in my Advanced System Care. since we last chatted. May revisit in six months when sp2 available.
