Select the executable file and when the downloading is over clic the icon u have just got. After restart, everything came back on line. If any item listed under the Sound, video and game controllers category has a speaker icon WITH a red X, right-click that item and select Enable. If prompted for a location of drivers, try pointing it to your sound card CD or your Windows CD.
Unfortunately, I ended up rebuilding my PC (video card was virtually dead as well) which, as you would imagine, solved the problem. Then I tried to reinstall Microsoft Windows service pack 3 and it worked the sound is working normal now.
