Comparing my onboard Realtek ALC889 (Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3) to my Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIe, the X-Fi simply sounds richer, punchier, clearer, and the instruments and vocals have audibly better separation. I should probably be a bit more informed on a card I've already owned for a number of years. comfy with big velvet ear pads. It has great sound too and has optical in and out as well as analog outputs.

The UNi Xonar drivers allow you to stop 2-channel content from playing on the rear surround speakers. A side effect of this is that the sound gets choppy or produces drop outs sometimes, which forces me to increase the sample buffers, which again increases the latency.... :-( There

The DSX is more neutral-sounding than the DGX but the DGX has a headphone amp. Although most people agree that sound cards are much better than onboard, a lot of them say that its only worth getting one if you listen to flacs.
The sound card I use is M-Audio's Delta 44.. In 15 years it should be just as useable as today.I have never even considered anything external. My adviser recommended one of their products, but one review for that product mentioned that it does not support streaming audio, and that's a must for me. Its worth buying expensive stuff like my GTX980, but not cheaper things like a sound card.
