VDMSound is abandoned because of some modern Windows incompatibility, so it no longer works there (Vista, 7) from what I've heard. So far, my luck with ISA Sound Blaster in Dos Machines is not too good. Yeah, some people already want EFI to take over instead of the BIOS. I'm scared that maybe even these suggested sound cards may or may not work for reasons unknown. this contact form
Barney For what it's worth - which is very little in this particular thread - Creative SBs are the indisputably best sound card you can use in Win9x. AudioPCI handles the Legacy DMA func tion in a similar fashion. If you are unsure of your settings when configuring a sound card in an MS-DOS game it is recommended you try the above three settings first. But yeah, manufacturers are annoyingly closed minded about supporting third-party OSes.

Functionally AudioPCI traps on access of the SoundBlaster registers and then issues the appropriate IRQ or SERR command on the PCI bus. If it still don't work and the speakers are connected the rigth way (and volume knob turned all up), the card is problably malfunctionaling. Then you wouldn't need a separate machine set up or have to buy any additional "compatible" hardware (though they use emulation, of course). Optionally a LPC2ISA bridge can be equipped as a customized version of the product, but then there is only very limited memory access on ISA bus possible. When I set it up as SB Pro 2, I get music and no speech.

I know it's overkill for dos work but it's in peices over there in my closet and not being used, so And using existing hardware without spending money on something is I'm not sure, though, whether they're SoundBlaster Pro or SoundBlaster 16 compatible. Does the SB PCI 64 still do FM? I mean when I had amd k6 500mhz Games ran smoothly in dos also.
Speaking of which, I know this is a dumb question, but when would you have been able to buy a PC of these specs? Nothing else is needed. one card isn't going to do everything well.
