I s there any hope left for this machine? At James F's suggestion I got ATIH 2012 (rather than the 2011 plus package) and it does make a disc image backup of the Sony GPT drive. To Scott: ATIH 2012 did make a disk image backup of my Sony 'S' GPT hard drive without any complications. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do. ATI 2011 definitely did not handle GPT and ati 2012 definitely should handle GTP basic disks.
The 2012 version includes (according to the 2012 information page) "Full support for UEFI and GPT disks."
